Harris Teeter Is Investing $253M in Charlotte: Where New Stores and Upgrades Are Coming

Key Takeaway: Harris Teeter plans to invest approximately $253 million across the Charlotte region over the next three years. The plan includes new stores in Kannapolis, Lake Wylie and Fort Mill, plus renovations in Matthews, Waxhaw, Concord, Huntersville, Fort Mill, Rock Hill and other communities.

Harris Teeter is making one of its largest recent investments in its hometown market. The Matthews-based grocer announced a three-year, $253 million plan to add stores and modernize existing locations throughout the Charlotte metro. According to Harris Teeter’s September 2026 announcement, the investment will reach communities on both sides of the North Carolina-South Carolina line.

Three New Harris Teeter Stores Are Coming to the Charlotte Metro

Kannapolis, NC

A new 53,000-square-foot store is planned at North Main Street and Loop Road on the former Cannon Mills site. It marks a return to Kannapolis, where the first store built under the Harris Teeter name opened after Harris Food Store and Teeter’s Food Mart merged in 1960. Plans include a Starbucks, pharmacy, fuel center, pickup service and expanded fresh-food departments.

Lake Wylie, SC

Harris Teeter’s first Lake Wylie store is planned for WestLake Village at State Highway 55 and SC-49. The 61,000-square-foot location is expected to include a fuel center, drive-thru pharmacy, Starbucks, pickup service and expanded prepared-food offerings. Fort Mill, SC

The fourth Harris Teeter serving Fort Mill is planned for Catawba Ridge Market at Dobys Bridge Road and Fort Mill Parkway. At roughly 61,000 square feet, it will bring another major grocery option to one of Charlotte’s fastest-growing southern corridors. Which Existing Harris Teeter Stores Are Getting Upgrades?

Harris Teeter has named Matthews, Waxhaw, Concord and Huntersville in North Carolina, along with Fort Mill and Rock Hill in South Carolina, among the communities receiving renovations. The company has not yet published a complete store-by-store schedule.

Depending on the location, improvements may include larger fresh-food, bakery and prepared-meal areas, updated layouts and fixtures, parking and cart-area improvements, faster pickup and delivery service, and refreshed signage and décor. The upgrades will roll out in phases over the next three years.

What Does the Investment Mean for Charlotte-Area Homebuyers?

The locations are notable because they follow several of the metro’s established growth corridors, including Cabarrus County, Lake Wylie, York County and southern Mecklenburg and Union counties. A new or renovated grocery store does not determine home values by itself, but convenient retail is one of the practical amenities buyers often compare when choosing between communities.

Questions Buyers Ask

When will the new Harris Teeter stores open?
Harris Teeter’s September announcement did not provide exact opening dates. Local reporting says the Kannapolis, Lake Wylie and Fort Mill stores are expected to open in early 2027, although schedules can change as construction progresses.

Is every Charlotte-area Harris Teeter being renovated?
No. Harris Teeter says select stores will receive improvements, and the scope will vary by location. Matthews, Waxhaw, Concord, Huntersville, Fort Mill and Rock Hill are among the communities specifically identified.

Will a new grocery store increase nearby home values?
Retail access can improve everyday convenience and may add to a community’s appeal, but it should not be treated as a guarantee of appreciation. Home values still depend on factors such as neighborhood demand, housing supply, condition, schools, commute patterns and comparable sales.
